Description

This validated and reliable tool is widely used to measure health related quality of life in patients with chronic airflow limitations. The instrument consists of 20 questions scored on a 7-point Likert-type scale in four domains: dyspnea, fatigue, emotional function and mastery.

The original Chronic Respiratory Questionnaire (CRQ) is an interviewer-administered instrument. Also available is the self-administered version of the CRQ. The advantage of this version is that there is no requirement for presence of an interviewer during the completion of the questionnaire.

The CRQ is available in four different formats (approximate time needed for the first administration):

  1. The original interviewer administered CRQ, called the CRQ (16 minutes)
  2. A self-administered CRQ including the standardized dyspnea domain, called the CRQ-SAS (8 minutes)
  3. A self-administered CRQ including the individualized dyspnea domain, called the CRQ-SAI (16 minutes)
  4. An interviewer-administered standardized version, called the CRQ–IAS (8 minutes)

The original CRQ and the CRQ-IAS can be obtained by filling out our request form from our website: http://ip.mcmaster.ca/questionnaires/qol-request or contact milo@mcmaster.ca or

The CRA-SAS and CRQ-SAI are available for the below specified applications

Background Information:

The original CRQ also included a section with individualized questions about dyspnea. Because under some circumstances investigators will want to use identical questions for ALL respondents the CRQ has been standardized through inclusion of five identical questions inquiring about dyspnea. This new version is entitled the self-administered chronic respiratory questionnaire “CRQ-SAS”. Thus, while you may want to use the original interviewer-administered CRQ, you might find the CRQ-SAS more attractive for use in your work. The CRQ-SAS has been evaluated in two randomized controlled trials (Schunemann HJ, et al. Eur Resp J 2005 Jan;25(1):31-40; (Puhan MA et al. Health Qual Life Outcomes) and has been widely used.

Although standardizing the dyspnea activities facilitates use and comparison of the CRQ, (Schunemann HJ, et al. Chest. 2003 Oct;124(4):1421-9), it was found that the individualized dyspnea questions in the original CRQ show slightly greater responsiveness (that is the property to measure change in health related quality of life). Because responsiveness might be of highest priority for some users of the CRQ, a version was developed that is self-administered but includes individualized dyspnea questions. This is the CRQ-SAI. Finally, we have standardized also the original interviewer-administered version of the CRQ, the CRQ-IAS.

Potential Applications

Available applications through flintbox:

  • Academic research (<100 patients)
  • Evaluation studies for a duration of three years in clinical settings for practitioners (e.g. physio or occupational therapists, family doctors) to evaluate patients

Other applications, please complete the request form at http://ip.mcmaster.ca/questionnaires/qol-request or contact milo@mcmaster.ca

  • Clinical trials (including investigator-initiated clinical trials)
  • Larger scale observation or evaluation studies

State of Development

The CRQ are validated and reliable quality of life measures for patients with chronic airflow limitations. It has been used extensively in research and clinical trials since 2001.
